Most candidates think more words = more clarity.
It doesn’t.
It creates confusion.
When you overexplain, two things happen:
• Your message gets buried
• Your confidence gets questioned
The interviewer isn’t thinking, “This is thorough.”
They’re thinking, “What’s the point?”
Overexplaining doesn’t help you.
It signals:
• Lack of clarity
• Lack of control
• Lack of trust in your own message
And under pressure, it gets worse.
You start filling space… instead of leading the conversation.
They don’t talk more.
They say less—but mean more.
They:
• Answer directly
• Pause instead of rambling
• Let the interviewer lean in
Because they understand:
Clarity creates confidence.
Brevity creates authority.
Every answer should pass three filters:
Relevant – Does this answer the question?
Clear – Can it be understood immediately?
Concise – Can it be said in fewer words?
If not—you’re talking too much.
Stop trying to prove everything.
Start controlling what’s understood.
That means:
• Lead with the point
• Support it briefly
• Stop talking
Let the interviewer ask for more.
That’s control.
This is where most candidates fall apart—and where top candidates separate.
Inside Decoded Interviewing, we train you to:
• Eliminate overexplaining
• Communicate with precision under pressure
• Deliver answers that are remembered—not endured
Because in interviews…
The candidate who controls the message controls the decision.
